When wearing sustainably-produced clothing, you can’t help but spread the joy you feel knowing you have made a change. Imagine being complemented on your new pair of hand-crafted sandals. Rather than a simple ‘thank you’ and move on, you feel compelled to share their story, because from beginning to end you know exactly where they’ve been.
They began in the hands of a young Ugandan woman and are now yours.
This young woman is striving towards a secure life by working for Sseko because Sseko is extraordinary – they hire Ugandan women whom are determined to improve their lives by attaining a university degree. This degree will make them eligible for well-paying jobs that can lift them out of poverty, drastically changing the course of their lives and the lives of their families.
If you have read our past articles about how you can participate in the fashion revolution for free, you know that you can make a difference without a single purchase. If you are in the market for a product (or just want to get your paws on a one of a kind, hand-crafted product), please follow our directory below to scope out our favorite companies!
Each of these companies have created their products using ethical (mainly focused on humanitarian rights – wage equality, working conditions, and worker empowerment) and/or environmentally-friendly means (decreased chemical treatments, waste, and pollution).
As a disclosure, we affiliate with some companies listed. Indeed, we make a percentage of profit based on your purchase, but we truly admire and appreciate the work that these companies do.
Women’s Apparel and Accessories | They make sure customers know that they are making a difference – each product comes with a signed note from the Ugandan woman who made it. We love their women’s sandals, bags, and textiles!
Women’s Apparel and Accessories | They are super trendy, elegant, and informative – you know exactly how much water and waste was created as your product was being produced. We love their formal and casual dresses and two-piece sets!

Men’s and Women’s Apparel and Accessories | They have clothing suitable for all types of sustainable shoppers (vegan/organic materials) and everything is ethically made. They also have a really great blog with topics ranging from DIY, to styling, to recipes!
Men’s, Women’s, and Kid’s Socks | They have strategically-designed socks for every activity. We also love their funky designs and colors!
Outdoor Gear and some Apparel and Accessories | We love their adventurous style! Check them out if you are searching for hammocks, bug nets, and tarps.
Men’s, Women’s, and Kid’s Apparel and Accessories and Home Décor and Goods | By selling high-quality products, you buy less which saves resources (how selfless is that business model?!). Plus, they have just about everything you could need!
We may vary from our goal of being a sustainable shopper, but our intent will become habit and our habits will manifest themselves into a lifestyle which we are proud of. We have the freedom to choose how your clothing is made and what it is made with; so, we have the chance to reduce waste, reduce water consumption, and provide a stable livelihood for someone and their family.
We are working on finding and partnering with more sustainable companies, but for now, please take a look at some of our favorite sustainable fashion blogs/online marketplaces (and please reach out if you are/know of companies whom affiliate!):
EcoCult | They have a bounty of fantastic companies listed on their site along with great resources if you live in NYC.
The Good Trade | Beautifully designed and curated, this site touches about every ethical and environmental subject related to fashion and beauty.
Done Good | This is the place to come if you are in need of a deal. Whether you care about sustainability or not, the high-quality companies and coupon codes they give you are reason enough to give this site a peek!
Thanks so much for your read and please comment with any pointers and feedback – we love to know how we can improve and what we’re doing well!
Happy Fashion Revolution Week,
Pete and Kiana
