Location: We recommend starting at the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park then follow Sunset Cliffs Blvd northward then make a U-turn at Point Loma Ave and head back down south.
- Physical: the trail is flat though there are divots and the trail transitions between pavement and packed dirt
- Others: watch your kiddos (the drop-off at the edge is very high and not very child-proof), dogs allowed (including on the accessible beaches)
Ambiance: active and relaxed
Best for: easy exercise, sight-seeing, accessing the beach
On the last day of our Weekend in San Diego (click here to see what we did!), we stopped in Sunset Cliffs and La Jolla on our way home. We hung out in the Natural Park for a bit then decided to venture off to hike along Sunset Cliffs Blvd to catch more of the amazing views. The trail follows the coastline with big blue on one side and really beautiful houses on the other so any way you look, you’re in for a treat!
This is really less of a hike and more of a walk so sandals and non-exercise clothing is acceptable, however, since there is little shade and no public drinking water available, sun protection and water are a good idea. There is also beach access along the trail leading to calm coves like this one:
Following the trail in one direction is 1.3 miles so this is a nice walk if you feel like stretching your legs and getting out of the city. If you are looking for more of a hike, you may find something here, or if you just want to get to the beach without the hiking nonsense, you may find something here. The convenient location, stunning views, and low level of exertion are why we chose this trail and it delivered!
Thanks so much for your read and please comment with any pointers and feedback – we love to know how we can improve and what we’re doing well!
